BACKSTORY

NEC's PC Engine CD and SEGA's Mega-CD (known as the TurboGrafx-CD and Sega CD in the US, respectively) were my first experiences with CD-based video game consoles, both imported from Japan. To be specific, I owned the PC Engine Duo and the Wondermega, two iconic systems in their own right. While I found Sega's console to be decent and enjoyable, my heart was completely captured by the PC Engine CD. Its unique library of games, charming design, and innovative use of CD technology stood out to me in a way that no other console did at the time.

Over the years, my admiration for the PC Engine CD has only grown. Today, I own a collection of around 300 games for the system, out of the roughly 500 ever released. Most of my games are complete with their original registration cards and spine cards - a detail that makes the collection feel truly special. As a heartfelt tribute to this beloved console, I decided to create a virtual shelf to showcase the box art of these games. This wasn't just a casual project; I personally scanned every single game, including the manuals, at 1200 dpi to ensure that every detail was captured with precision.

Speaking of my scans, I also undertook a long-term project called Super Street Scanner II. This project went beyond simply scanning video game box contents - it involved meticulously cleaning the scans, vectorizing logos, and creating usable templates. It was a labor of love aimed at preserving and showcasing gaming history in the best possible quality. You can learn more about the project here.

I also dumped every game in my collection and submitted the results to the well-known Redump database, a collaborative project dedicated to preserving disc-based media. Contributing to this project felt like a meaningful way to help safeguard the legacy of the PC Engine CD and its incredible library of games.

For me, this Virtual Shelf project goes beyond simple nostalgia - it's a celebration of one of the consoles that helped shape my love for gaming and collecting. The PC Engine CD wasn't just a piece of hardware; it was an experience, a gateway to an incredible library of games that continue to inspire me to this day (Lords of Thunder, Star Parodier, Fantastic Night Dreams: Cotton, Tengai Makyou II: Manji Maru, Serei Senshi Spriggan and so on).

Fun fact: I own around 300 PC-Engine CD games, but this virtual shelf only displays 159. Looks like I’ve got some work to do to fill in the gaps!
