BACKSTORY

The 2012 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad, took over London from July 27 to August 12, turning the city into the ultimate stage for world-class athleticism. Spectators witnessed jaw-dropping performances from legends like Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps, while the event itself helped revitalize East London and champion the values of unity, diversity, and sportsmanship.

To celebrate the occasion, digiDingo decided to capture the Olympic spirit in a mobile game; thus, Athleticooh was born! Designed as a fast-paced, casual Track 'n Field-style experience for iOS and Android, the game let players compete in a variety of Olympic-inspired events from the comfort of their phones. I was in charge of making sure Athleticooh looked and sounded as exciting as the real thing. That meant handling visuals, animations, sound effects, and music - all while ensuring the game captured the energy and intensity of competitive sports.

Animating the events, however, was no small feat. Hurdling, long jump, high jump, swimming - each sport had its own unique motion and rhythm, and I had to nail the animations to make them feel right. So, I did what any dedicated game artist would do: I dove headfirst into an endless sea of instructional videos and tutorials, learning everything from proper running form to the physics of a perfect dive. The process was grueling, but in the end, watching those pixel athletes in action was totally worth it.

Fun fact: Grooh himself can be seen sitting somewhere in the audience in the background.

The game featured 100m, 200m, and 400m sprints, javelin throw, hurdle jumps, high jump, long jump, and rhythmic swimming, inspired by Olympic Games disciplines.

Athleticooh launched on iOS on July 26, 2012 (just one day before the Olympic Games officially kicked off) making it the perfect warm-up for sports fans. Three days later, on July 29, the Android version hit the digital shelves, ensuring even more players could get in on the action. The timing couldn't have been better, as it let people experience their own virtual Olympic moments right alongside the real-world competition.

Following the success of digiDingo's critically acclaimed Grooh!!, Athleticooh continued the company's streak of delivering fun, engaging mobile games. And if that wasn't enough, it also set the stage for Colorooh, a whimsical and humorous follow-up that took the studio's creative energy in an entirely new (and very colorful) direction.
